Are You Laboring on Labor Day?

Ah, the dreaded Monday holidays...

(my apologies if you live outside the U.S. and are NOT on a holiday today...)

I feel like there are ALWAYS so. many. questions. about how to handle Monday holidays in StudioMusicTeacherWorld.

My top suggestions:

  • Take Labor Day off and meet the Monday of Thanksgiving week instead (a week I *hope* you're otherwise taking off!)

  • Take the ENTIRE week of Labor Day off (I've talked to several of you doing this and I'm filled with #pianoteacherenvy)

  • Meet in GROUPS T-W-R the weeks of Monday holidays (giving yourself not one - but TWO - long weekends!)

  • Teach anyway, but plan a reward at the end of your day

For the LONGEST TIME, I taught every possible day the calendar would allow. Teaching on Monday holidays didn't really phase me.

However, once I had a family, knowing my husband and children had a chill, relaxing day off made me feel resentful.

(and, you should know by now I do NOT think we do our best work in states of resentment)

Because of that revelation, I generally do everything I can to avoid teaching on Monday holidays.

THIS YEAR: due to missing a week of lessons when I was sick a few weeks ago, I'm teaching most of the day. Bummer, right?

Well, it's all about perspective.

I'm really trying to view today as a gift: I was able to take a week off of teaching to rest when I needed it, and I'm not going to be out any money. My families care about their lessons so much, they are happy to come on a holiday. I'm not going to have to teach late each evening for weeks on end to get these lessons made-up.

In the end, teaching on a holiday is not the end of the world.

BUT. You'd better believe I'm going to reward myself with something delicious for dinner (that I do not have to prepare myself!) followed by a long, quiet walk... alone. 😉

Cheers to making the most of the opportunities we're given! 🥂

IN OTHER NEWS: Happy LAUNCH DAY to the latest 6-week session of the Studio Foundations Course!

This morning, there are some INCREDIBLE teachers waking up to find the first three course videos and workbook pages unlocked and ready for them.

Our first week focuses on three questions I ask at the start of any Pedagogy course I teach. Establishing our own answers to these questions helps provide a clear framework to build the rest of our course experience around.

If YOU ever feel like you get stuck "going through the motions" in your teaching, the Studio Foundations Course is exactly what you need to hit that REFRESH button on your MusicTeacherLife.

The course centers around 14 Foundational Principles that keep EVERYONE involved in the lesson experience happy and progressing forward: myself, my students, and their families.

If YOU have 1-hour a week to spare for the next 6 weeks (knowing you *also* have access to the material for a full year!), consider joining this invested group of teachers for a deep-dive into the REAL why's and how's of what we do as music teachers.

TODAY on the Podcast:

Episode 142 is a summary of just a FEW thoughts I have regarding the stance that WE - as teachers - are the method, rather than the materials we choose to use.

FREE Weekly Reflections Journal

In last Monday's webinar, I released a few new freebies: one of them being my revised (!) Weekly Reflection Journal.

Do yourself a favor and print 5 today. Then, use this as a catch-all for every studio success story, to-do, etc. throughout the week.

Once you complete 5, read through them, look for patterns, file them away, and print another 5.

Again: Hit that REPLY button and tell me what YOU'RE up to today!

Onward and upward toward a promising week ahead! 🥂
