ESSENTIAL Teacher Budgeting for the Month of May

Well, my teacher friends.... we've made it to May!

MAY: where we ALL start to feel "over it" (and by WE, I mean teachers, students, AND their parents)

MAY: where we are simultaneously looking back AND looking forward

aaaaand....

MAY: where - for many studio teachers - this is our last month of "regular" income before the fall semester begins.

There are MANY all-star teachers who seem to have cracked the code on avoiding low-income summers. (Jennifer Foxx and her summer camps always comes to mind.)

However, many of us - by design or otherwise - experience a pretty significant dip in summer income.

If this is true for you, I have one important budget consideration for you today: What can you buy NOW that will help you this summer?

Each year, I try to maximize my May budget to help my Future Self. For example, I renew my MTNA Membership and National Certification. The membership year "officially" begins July 1st, but taking care of it when I have a more typical income keeps me from getting too sweaty about it. Ha!

I also do a major Target run and stock up on all paper/bathroom/laundry/kitchen supplies we will need this summer. I don't know about you, but it feels SO GOOD to have those things on hand, knowing I won't have to budget for them the next few months.

Even though I don't usually get excited about spending money, I always look strangely forward to this ritual. I think it's because I know I'm taking care of things that have, once upon a time, felt stressful. Doesn't it feel good to take care of your Future Self?

(I know I'm not the only one who has found herself at the end of July with NO extra cash, desperately counting down the days until August 1st. Live and learn, right?!)

Soooo... now I'm curious: What do YOU do in the month of May to prepare for your summer situation? Please share by hitting REPLY on this email.

Speaking of Summer!

One of my favorite summertime projects is hosting a Summer Study for High School students interested in learning the basics of piano pedagogy.

As someone who was hired to teach at her small-town music store at age 14, I have a real passion for helping young pianists discover a love for teaching (while also equipping them with actual training and research; something I definitely NEEDED).

I offer an in-person option for those local to me in Indiana, as well as a VIRTUAL option for those around the world. The virtual option is largely asynchronous, though there are three live meetings included.

I am now accepting applications for high school pianists who are interested in taking this course with me. The application window closes May 20th.

Candidates should be entering 9th-12th grades this fall (recent graduates are also welcome to apply), and should play at the Intermediate level or above.

If you have personable, motivated students who might be interested in this this opportunity, please have them check out this page for details.
