Your Upcoming GIFT of January (One Thought Thursday No. 65)

Two years ago, I published an episode titled, The Upcoming Gift of January. You can listen to it here.

The gist is this: DON'T SLEEP ON JANUARY, friends.

Does your studio have a pain point you would love to address? January is your opportunity.

Many studio teachers implement new policies and procedures at the start of the fall term, but January is a great time to introduce new protocols (or even offer important reminders).

  • Fleshing out your sick policy?
  • Clarifying practice expectations?
  • Implementing a pre-lesson hand-washing routine?
  • Cracking down on late pick-ups?
  • Dreaming of requiring auto-pay tuition?

This is your chance!

Come January, we will all be swept up in feelings of New Year - New Us...and it's a natural time to shift necessary elements of your work.

Many teachers miss this opportunity because we turn off our "business brains" to enjoy a much-needed break, then feel overwhelmed by the brutal return to reality after the holidays.

Do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes today contemplating what - if any - studio adjustments you'd like to make in the coming year.

Then, take a few more minutes and actually draft the communication. Don't wait until January to write the email; it's too easy to talk yourself out of it then.

Get your thoughts in writing THIS WEEK, so they are ready to polish up and send at the start of the new year.

...that's your one thought for this Thursday, friends!

🥂 Cheers to embracing the opportunity to address studio aggravations NOW, rather than waiting another 8 months to do so. 🥂

TELL ME: What changes/clarifications/reminders are you sending to studio families this January? Knowing your pain points helps me be a better Anytime Piano Teacher Friend. 🙂

Please know: I read every response, even though I might be slow at replying.💜

This Week on the Podcast:

Amy Chaplin and I had a blast recording two episodes for you this week. Part 1 aired on Beyond Measure, where we each share five things that ARE working for us in this season of life. Part 2 was featured on Amy's 150th episode of the Piano Pantry Podcast, where we talked about five things that are NOT working for us.

December Performance Challenge

...if you're looking for a way to keep students playing over Winter Break, I have just the solution for you!

Must-Teach Music

In last week's session of Teachers Teaching Teachers, I confessed I often forget about Eric Baumgartner's music... until I hear someone else play it and remember how FANTASTIC it is.

This is a versatile collection my students always love... when I remember to assign it! 😅

A Favorite Read

For several years now, I've started the new year by re-reading The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. This year will be no different.

PS: Last year, I led a book study for Patreon members and the videos are still available to anyone who joins.

My Pride and Joy

Last week, Patreon Community members gathered for our first-ever Teacher Show and Tell.

I knew it would be great... but, friends, it was BETTER than I could have thought.

When I tell you our monthly meetups bolster ME for the coming month, I mean it.

The SuperFriends found in the Beyond Measure Community are second-to-none and nurturing that group is one of my absolute favorite things in life.

Joining is a great holiday gift for you AND for me.

Don't forget to HIT REPLY and tell me what changes/reminders/clarifications you're offering up studio families this January.
